We take death certificates, government IDs, and the details of a person's life online. We collect only what the work requires, and we say plainly what we do with it.
What we collect
- About you — your name, your email address, your relationship to the person whose accounts we are handling, and the password you set for your account here. That password is for our site only.
- About the subject — their name, email addresses and other names they used, date of birth and date of death, and the accounts you ask us to handle.
- Documents you upload — the death certificate and a government ID proving your authority to act. A death certificate can contain sensitive information, including a Social Security number and a cause of death. We treat these documents as sensitive and store them accordingly.
- Payment information — handled entirely by Stripe. Your full card number never reaches our systems.
- Basic technical data — IP address, browser, and request timing in our application logs, used to rate-limit abuse and diagnose problems.
- How you found us — the page you arrived on, the site that sent you (a search engine, for example), and, if you came from an advertisement, the click identifier the advertising platform added to the link. We use this only to learn which channels bring families to us. It is kept with your purchase record and is not sent back to any advertising platform.
If you bought a plan
A plan is bought while the person is living, so most of what is above happens later. We do not ask for a death certificate when you buy a plan. We hold the name and email address of the person you name to activate it. We contact them only if you choose to send them a message, and when the plan is activated — never for any other reason. A plan does not expire. We keep it until it is activated, or until you ask us to delete it. Once it is activated it becomes a case, and the rest of this page applies.
What we never collect
We never ask for, accept, or hold the passwords, security answers, recovery codes, two-factor secrets, or seed phrases for the subject's accounts. We work only through each platform's official process. If login information is offered to us, we decline it.
Who we share it with
- The platforms we contact on your behalf — what each one requires to process a deceased-user or legacy request, and, where you have written one, a short note about a specific account. Nothing else.
- Stripe, our payment processor.
- Microsoft Azure, which hosts our site, our database, and our document storage, and delivers our email.
- Referral partners, where a partner referred you — only whether the referral became a case. Never case contents, never documents.
We do not sell your information. We do not use case data or death certificates for advertising.
How long we keep it
If you bought a plan and it has not been activated, none of that has happened yet — see “If you bought a plan” above. The death certificate and the ID you upload are deleted ninety days after your case is complete, and the deletion is recorded. The record of your case — what was requested, submitted, and completed — is kept without those documents.
Your choices
You can change how we contact you at any time on the manage preferences page. To ask what we hold about you, or to ask us to delete it, write to contact@thelastlogoff.com. We will respond as the law requires.
